Itinerary:
This program is closed - no new swimmers will be added to the group

We all know swimming is one of the best ways to get fit and stay fit. It's low impact, great for your joints and a fantastic supplement to any training program. Plus - it's really inexpensive - community pools cost under $3 a visit and most pools provide training gear, accessible by TTC or have parking facilities close by

However, swimming programs are hard to start and maintain when you take it on by yourself. Are you swimming efficiently? Would you like to swim more than a few lengths of breast stroke? Do you know how to get the most of the training gear? Would you like to join a masters swim program but are unsure if you have what it takes? I'm hoping this series of swim sessions will get you to that next level of fitness and skill improvement.

The main goal of this program will be to improve your swimming skills significantly over the fall and winter. I plan to create a 10 week course based on "Swimming for Total Fitness" by Dr. Jane Katz. Each week we'll go to a TTC accessible pool for lane swim. I will have a lap workout that includes a warm up, drill set, lap sets and cool down, which will gradually improve over the weeks of the program. By the end of the 10 weeks you'll be a better all around swimmer - not only will your strokes and stamina improve, but you'll feel confident to go to any pool with a workout plan. And best yet, your overall fitness will improve and you'll be able to hike farther, run faster, backpack longer than ever by next summer

This will be a very structured program, so you will need to be committed to the entire 10 weeks in order to see the benefits. For the most part we will meet on Friday nights, but it will depend on the fall pool schedule. We may discuss trying other pools and that will affect the times and date.

A few days before we meet, I'll email out the week's training program. That will give you some time to try it on your own, or contact me if there are skills or terms that you do not understand. There will be two separate streams of training, intermediate and advanced. Please read the following carefully in order to decide which group is more suited to your swim skill level. Keep in mind that most community pools are 25m in length. Backyard and fitness centre pools (like in a condo) are about 12m in length.

Intermediate:
  • can swim 75m (3 lengths of most pools) WITHOUT stopping
  • knows the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl (elementary & windmill), sidestroke, breast stroke
  • knows how to scull and tread water
  • drills will start at a total of 300m (warm up, core and cool down) and work up to 1000m

Advanced:
  • can swim 200m (8 lengths of most pools) without stopping.
  • strokes: freestyle - using a s-stroke arm pull and body roll, elementary & windmill backstroke with body roll, sidestroke, breaststroke, butterfly basics
  • drills will start at 1000m and work up to 1800m
In the first few weeks of training you will not be asked to swim more than the minimum requirement before getting a 30-60 second rest.

I will not be critiquing your swimming technique, however the drills are designed to help you with various individual skills (arms, legs, breathing, rhythm).
