Itinerary:
The West Rim Trail is a 30 mile hiking trail located adjacent to the Western Rim of Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon. The northern section of the canyon is about 800 feet deep and about 2,000 feet from rim to rim. The exposed rock is estimated to be more than 350 million years old. The trail offers spectacular views of the Canyon. In some spots the trail follows the very rim of the Canyon, so watch your step. -- Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

The itinerary is as follows:

  • Friday: Depart Toronto for the 500km drive to the area. Stay overnight at a car campground.
  • Saturday: Hike. Stay at a backcountry campsite.
  • Sunday: Hike. Stay at a backcountry campsite.
  • Monday: Hike out. Return to Toronto.

We will be on the trail for 3 days, doing about 50km, so you must have either backpacking experience or strong hiking + car camping experience. If your experience is outside TOC make sure to outline it in the Notes section upon signing up. These qualification requirements will be strictly enforced to ensure everyone's fun and safety.

This trail is point-to-point. A local outfitter is located next to the northern trail head at Wellsboro. It will shuttle us to the southern trail head at Blackwell on Saturday morning. We will then backpack north to our car(s).

Please ensure your US travel documents are up to date. You must also have travel health insurance to participate in the trip. We will be leaving Toronto early to avoid the long-weekend traffic jams.

There will be a mandatory pre-meeting about two weeks prior to the trip. You must attend it to participate in the event.
