Itinerary:
This rugged, secluded trail is one of the longest in Ontario at 75km. It travels along the beautiful shoreline of Wakami Lake and takes you through the northern range of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest where you see rare islands of southern trees amidst the emerging boreal forest. You will also pass fragile bogs, remnant logging communities, and spectacular lookouts. The trail is situated on this height of land, which divides the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean watersheds. -- Park Newsletter

This trip is ideal for the experienced backpacker looking to add a tough Northern Ontario trip to his/her portfolio.

The itinerary is as follows:

  • Day 1: Depart Toronto for the 800km drive to the park. Stay overnight at the park's car campsite.
  • Days 2-6: Hike the Height of Land trail.
  • Day 7: Spare day. It will be used for a day hike or a sightseeing trip if not used up for other purposes.
  • Day 8: Return to Toronto.

Still reading? Great! Here are the prerequisites I require from you:

  • One successfully completed TOC backpacking event rated D5 or higher. You can take this trip with myself or with another TOC organizer. You can also substitute this with equivalent experience from outside TOC. In the later case, please outline such experience in the Notes field upon signing up.
  • Second successfully completed TOC backpacking event rated D5 or higher. You must take this trip with me. One trip is already posted for Algonquin in April and there will be more trips posted before registration cutoff.

The requirements above will be strictly enforced to ensure everyone's fun and safety.

Two special considerations for this trip:

  • We are going in before the annual July trail maintenance. Expect blowdowns to slow progress and complicate navigation.
  • The last section of the trail incorporates a short water crossing (a few hundred meters). A canoe and all associated paddling gear is made available by the park at the crossing point. You must possess rudimentary canoeing skills.
There will be a mandatory pre-meeting about two weeks prior to the trip. You must attend it to participate in the event.
