This was a last minute club event as I received an email from someone in Calgary who gave me a heads up that Bill was coming. I googled and realized he was here in 2 days! For the steep price of $5 we packed into St. Barnabas church on Danforth with a sell out crowd. But well worth the show - we got Mr. Bryson reading some of his favourite passages, and something from his new book as well. He's as charming and self-effacing as you'd expect him to be. A very enjoyable evening especially for TOC'ers who got to see their very own president get up to ask a question, making the sold out audience laugh with her own Bill Bryson anecdote - and his confirmation that yes, there is some truth to the rumour that 'Walk in the Woods' is being made into a movie starring Paul Newman & Robert Redford.
Deb, Rob and Alan couldn't stay after, but Libby, Dominic and I decided to hang out and Dominic bought a copy of 'Notes from a small Island' on my recommendation - and was shocked to discover that his home town was visited and described lovingly. That's quite a compliment in a Bryson book!
Libby left us and we were joined up with Lillian to wait in line for autographs, all of us clutching our books - LIlian had the new Thunderbolt Kid book, I carried the bible of hiking, A walk in the Woods, and Dominic had his new found treasure, opened to the page describing Lincoln. We got autographs, and chatted briefly and had our pictures taken - sent in by Lillian.
A wonderful way to spend an evening with a personable and funny writer.
