Wet, wet, wet! Saturday started out windy and wet and just got worse as we went through the day. The six intrepid hikers were absolute troopers - no complaints, cheerful despite being soaked through, with wet feet and numb hands. At times, the trail was several inches under water - we had to make careful detours around massive puddles (lakes?) on Cole's Sideround at the beginning of the day and again, along Colpoy's Range Road at the end of the hike.
We celebrated Joanna's birthday (belatedly) on Saturday night, at a charming restaurant/pub in Wiarton. Great lasagna, recommended by the waitress and approved by all six of us. Clearly, we hadn't received the memo, and we were completely outclassed by the locals, who were wearing their Wiarton Tuxedos - also known as plaid, flannel shirts!
Sunday was still blustery but at least it wasn't raining, and the sun did come out on occasion. The views from Skinner's Bluff across Colpoy's Bay to the southern-most part of the Bruce Peninsula were spectacular - sunlight and cloud shadows moving across the face of the white, limestone cliffs, while the last of this year's leaves did their best to impress us with the colour that was probably there a week ago. Mid-way through the day, we were extremely fortunate to have a porcupine wander across the trail in front of us, and then climb up a tree - presumably for its own protection, once it realized we were there. It was a very special moment to be so close to one of these shy creatures in the wild.
For those keeping track, we crossed the boundary of the Syndenham/Peninsula sections, and are now on the final leg up to Tobermory. Yay!!
