We had an early start on Friday and managed to get to the park just before noon.

Friday was an overcast day with temperatures around -3C. The lakes where covered with snow from a few inches to a foot deep depending on where the winds deposited it. The snow weight flooded sections of the ice, which slowed our progress. We made it up to midway down Killarney Lake where set-up camp.

Serguei and I shared the SilShelter tarp on the lake. Francois set up his one man tarp shelter (up the hill) in the woods. We got a fire going and had a combination of foods while we dried our soxes and boot liners. We hit the hay around 8:30pm

It was a mild night with temperatures around -3C. On Saturday we continued West to Norway Lake and then headed south along a portage trail to Kakakise Lake. Francois broke trail most of the way. Sometimes kilometers of 1 foot deep steps on the portage trails and the smaller lakes we traversed. It was a real stair master workout! About halfway down the lake we travelled passed a cabin. We decided to camp at the south west end of the lake. We set up camp in the woods in a nice shelter area near a rock face where we had a great firepit. The temperatures hovered around zero degrees. So we spent a few hours eating and drying our foot wear out for the next day.

The night was fairly mild at around -2C. Not an ideal temperature since clothes and sleeping bags then to get wet easily at these teperatures. Sleep well none the less.

Sunday we headed back to George Lake via Kakakise Creek and Freeland Lake. It was a little easier back tracking on our old trail once we hit Freeland Lake. It was another mild day with a gentle wind at our backs and temperatures around zero degrees again.

We where back at the car by 1:30pm and the drive home was clear sailing.

Good challenging trip!

See you all soon.

Gary
