Write Up:
Well, the weather guys got it completely wrong, the forecast showers were never in evidence and we had absolutely perfect spring hiking conditions - sunshine, a few clouds, a breeze to cool us off when we struggled up to the heights, and dry footing (mostly - Victor, you can lose the gaiters now, until the fall...)
After a wee bit of a false start - Lisa, you have to travel at less than mach 1 to see the road name signs - we had a good, steady, 5kph pace across the hike. IN the Dufferin Hi-Lands Section, the Bruce Trail wends its way through mostly deciduous forests - carpets of trout lilies will be open in the next week - and over rolling hills and is particularly beautiful in this area. Lunch was had beside the (ahem-mumble) River, just after the old Kilgorie Schoolhouse. From the section between 20th and 25th Sideroad, which follows a ridge, the views east across York Region were staggering. Apart from a few drunken fishermen at Pine Lake, we encountered no-one else all day; it's a wonderful feeling to have a large section of such a popular trail for your exclusive use...
A short trip back down Highway 10 to The Mad Hatters in Orangeville provided us with our own personal library, good food and good conversation (sorry to sound like a Kelsey's ad). Bashir regaled us with the tale of the British spies in the 50's and 60's - Burgess, MacLean, Philby and the others, Francoise was brave enough to try the Vodka and Romaine Lettuce soup - she claimed to enjoy it and who are we to argue, and an uneventful drive back to Toronto - 45 minutes to Kipling, I love this time of year before the cottage crowd gets on the road - made for a thoroughly enjoyable outing.
