Wow, what a great group of brave and hearty souls! -11* and windy along the escarpment, but it was a nice hike. After an initial added portion, we headed down the local roads towards some great waterfalls. Vineyards with their birdscare were definately in evidence. Lower Ball's falls were impressive, however due to some very icy sections, we were behind schedule and were unable to get up to the upper falls. We did notice alot of water in 20 mile creek, apparently due to rain that had fallen 2 days prior. As we continued along, it seemed that the trip length kept varying, sometimes there was 8 kms left, and sometimes more.
After a while we stopped and had lunch. Some water bottles were already frozen, and some of our food was crunchier than normal, but all in a days fun I guess. We also ended up climbing and descending the escarpment face several times over the hike. More than once there was actually stairs all the way up!
A little further along we passed through Cave Springs, which luckily marked the beginning of the end. The group was now generally quite tired, and ready to be done, although there were exceptions. Another 2 kms brought us to a road, which would have made a great final destination, except that our's was 2 kms further still. Finally as it was starting dusk we spotted the parking lot, and with it our link back home. Best of all was the burn barrel with a fire going near the parking area.
Total distance 21 kms
Time enroute 6hrs
