Write Up:
A fascinating look at a working, organic farm, with a large educational component thrown in for good measure. The young man who gave us the tour of the farm was extremely knowledgeable, and clearly very passionate about the work being done. It was a pleasure to encounter a guide who so obviously cares about how he is spending his working life.
The second tour covered the eco-house, which used straw-bale construction for the walls, and so many eco-friendly gadgets and techniques to reduce the building's footprint (not literally of course!), that a pamphlet would have been appropriate. Everything from composting toilets, to laminated solar roofing panels, to passive heating through concrete floors, to cast concrete counter tops and bathtub... a fascinating place, which really demonstrates what can be done when a proper plan of attach is prepared ahead of time.
A couple of the group members got their hands into work-mode by baking bread and churning butter. The results were a little charred from the wood-fired oven, but very tasty...
A browse around the farm shop for fresh vegetables, eggs and organically raised meat, and then a trip into Erin for a visit to Holtom's Bakery and an ice-cream rounded a very pleasant day.
