Write Up:
It was a rainy day in Scubaville... Erik & Jennifer met at the dock by the boat they were taking to adventure. Once gear & people were loaded they set off. Though the weather seemed fair at departure, during the hour or so ride to the first dive site it turned quite foul. The first dive was on the Mapledawn - a steel cargo ship that sank in 1924. They dove 3 shipwrecks that day. The second dive was very difficult given the 3-6 foot pitching waves and strong current they had to contend with. The schooner Marquette sank in 1856. There's not much left of it but the outer hull, but it's still fascinating to see and lie down in the belly of it which is deeper than the bottom surrounding the remains of the ship. The third dive on the schooner Thomas Cranage (lost Sept 1911) was certainly the highlight of the day. The weather was calming down a bit and the wreck was an impressive wooden schooner with lots of life around it. The bass had spawned and the crayfish were skittering around the rocks and crevasses of the shipwreck. Erik caught several crayfish to pet and show off to Jennifer (he let a 1-clawed crayfish go unmolested). The ride back to shore was long, but there was an impressive rainbow spanning from one end of the horizon to the other. The sun came out as we rounded the last headland into Penetanguishene harbour which made the task of unloading the diveboat and getting organized for departure back to Toronto much more pleasant than anticipated.
