Seven inspired and intrepid TOCers braved a poor (and as it turns out incorrect) weather forecast for above zero temps and rain and had a great time skiing. We welcomed two new members, Stacy and Margaret, to their first event. I spent the morning skiing with Peter, relatively new TOC, Margaret and Stacy. We tackled the North Red trail and won! Gary a very good and fast skier took off to ski by in himself, since no one could keep up with him. After skiing a bit in the morning, he came in for lunch and met with Pia. Then he was off again. In the afternoon I skied with Karen, who just started skiing this season and was out on her 7th outing. Since the conditions were soft and slow, I asked her if she wanted to try the South Red trail. What could possibly go wrong? And so we climbed up the “Big Sweat” and I showed Karen the finer points of sidestepping. When we got to the top, Karen decided that ”discretion was the better part of valour” and walked down the steepest part of the hill before skiing down the rest. All and all, Karen is making great strides learning to ski. In fact, during the course of the day, she bought her first set of skis! I had a great time and a good ski covering about 20 km, a decent distance for me. Gary also had a good day. Now if you ask him, he will tell you that he is now longer in peak condition. However, by the end of the day, according to his handy GPS, he has skied 39.89 kms!
