Itinerary: | |||||||
Explore the rugged beauty of Massasauga Provincial Park. Massasauga Provincial Park is an archipelago of islands situated on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, south of Parry Sound, Ontario. The park covers 13,050 hectares of Georgian Bay's shoreline and is accessible only by water. Granite outcrops, dotted with wind sculpted white pines, will set the stage as we make our way through the park's small inland lakes and waterways. This is going to be a relatively mellow weekend of breathtaking scenery, enjoying the beauty of the Canadian Shield and exploring.
We will drive to Massasauga on Saturday morning and make a pit stop to pick up our permits and canoes. We will begin our trip at the Three Legged Lake access point. We will canoe to Spider Lake, where we will set up camp at site 26. After setting up camp we can spend the rest of the day either exploring Spider and Clear Lakes or head out to wide open Georgian Bay and explore the narrows around it. We will paddle back to Three Legged Lake access point, and drive back to Toronto on Sunday afternoon. We'll need drivers for carpooling and transporting the canoes to and from the outfitter. People who are willing to drive may be given priority.
I have reserved canoes at the outfitter but canoe costs and reimbursement to me of the $20 reservation fee will be the responsibility of each pair of canoers. Canoe rentals are $38/day. TRIP NOTES/REQUIREMENTS:
You must have strong basic paddling skills and previous paddling experience
You must have overnight, backcountry camping experience. You must have the necessary backcountry gear to participate (some common gear and tent sharing is possible). If you do not own something, be prepared to rent or buy it well in advance of the trip.
You must be comfortable paddling in a canoe for several hours strait and able to carry 40lbs, plus a canoe along a portage.
If I am not familiar with your backcountry/paddling background, please enter SPECIFIC details of your experience in the “notes” section when registering (ie: distance, length of trip, location, certifications etc. Something to give me a strong indication you can manage on this trip).
Planning and arrangements will be made via email. Please respond in a timely manner, or you will be dropped from the trip.
