PETROGLYPHS PROVINCIAL PARK

"Deep within a forest northeast of Peterborough is the largest known concentration of aboriginal rock carvings in Canada. Carved into the white marble rock face hundreds of years ago, the 900 petroglyphs depict turtles, snakes, birds, humans and other images. Hiking trails meander through surrounding forests, wetlands and rocky ridges."

Carpool drivers may be given preference if cars are needed. People will be added to the event from the waitlist as drivers become available. This event will be able to accommodate 16-ish participants if we have enough drivers.

After arriving at the Park we will first go hiking, covering several of the trails in the park. The distance will be about 12-16km. Parts of the trail will be muddy.

After the hike, we will settle the carpool and parking costs. We can then have lunch, view the petroglyphs and visitor center at leisure, and leave to return to Toronto whenever your carpool members and driver are ready to do so. We don't all have to return at the same time, you can work it out with your carpool. I don't believe the visitor's center sells food, but they do have bathrooms. Note that the park closes at 5pm.

You may also want to use this time to visit bright blue/green McGinnis Lake – one of only a handful of meromictic (layers of water that don’t intermix) lakes in Canada. A roughly 1 km walk from the visitor's center.

There will likely be bugs around. You should take whatever precautions you think are necessary, such as bug spray, long sleeves, pants etc.

There is a fee to enter the Park along with parking fees for cars. $15 each should cover these fees, but we'll have a better sense of the cost when we're there. The carpool amount is in addition to this estimate.

Please see park website for further information about the park: https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/petroglyphs

DOGS: Well behaved, well socialized dogs are welcome to come on this event. Dogs are not allowed in the visitor centre and must be on a leash on the trails. Please ensure the leash is no longer than six feet long. Please pick up after your dog. Please indicate if you are bringing a dog when you sign up.

Important announcement by the park authorities: Please be aware that for ceremonial reasons, the indigenous community has requested that dogs not be present at the Petroglyphs site. There are benches available 100m up the path from the glyph site where groups with dogs can take turns going to see the site. Dogs are also not permitted within the Learning Place Visitor Centre, dogs are permitted throughout the rest of the park as long as they are leashed. Please note that photography is not permitted at the glyph site. Photography is permitted throughout the rest of the park.
