| Itinerary: |
This trip is a repeat of the May 2009 three-day bike excursion to the Niagara Region, which was most enjoyable. The event will be proceeding, whether rain or shine.
We will drive to St. Catharines early on Saturday morning, May 22, 2010--note the mandatory 7:00 a.m. departure time--and stay at the Brock University Student residence for two nights, returning to Toronto on Monday, May 24, 2009, Victoria Day, in the evening.
Our focus during the weekend will be long-distance cycling. The idea is to go cycling on the lovely bike paths in the Niagara Region on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. On Saturday, the day of our arrival in the region, we will attempt to cycle on the Welland Canal pathway, all the way from St. Catharine's to Port Colborne and back. That evening, we may drive to Niagara on the Lake for supper and ice cream. If not, we will find a good restaurant in St. Catharines. On Sunday, we will cycle on the Niagara Parkway, with the aim of going to Fort Erie and back (a few brave souls, myself included, may try to do the whole loop from St. Catharines, via the Niagara Parkway to Fort Erie, and then from Fort Erie back to St. Catharines via the Welland Canal). On Sunday evening we will also drive out to a good restaurant. On Monday morning and afternoon, we will go on a shorter, half-day ride somewhere in the region, before leaving for Toronto in the mid- to late-afternoon. But do not make any plans in Toronto for early evening on Monday, as we may not be back until 8 or 9 p.m. in the evening, and you are likely to be quite tired from all of the cycling. We may also take the opportunity, while cycling in the Niagara Region, to visit a local winery or two, if time permits.
Be sure that if you sign up for this event, you are able to cycle a minimum of 185-240 km over three days--at least 50 km on Saturday, between 75 and 130 km on Sunday, and at least 60 km on Monday)at an average speed of about 20-23 km/hr. The weekend is not intended for leisurely or occasional riders but for keen, fit cyclists who enjoy long-distance riding. If the latter description does not apply to you, kindly leave the available spots for those who fit the description. If you are uncertain as to whether you fit the description, please contact me and we can have a talk about whether this event is for you.
During the weekend in Niagara, all participants will be required to keep up with the other riders and keep their bikes in a good state of repair. That means, for instance, that if you have a flat, you should be equipped and able to change your tube independently. If I am around, I will try to assist you if I can. But riders should be fairly self-sufficient even when riding in groups. Cell-phones are needed, so that we can stay in communication at all times.
At times during the weekend, we may break into two smaller groups: one faster that will cover longer distances, and one slower that will cover shorter distances. But the latter group will still be riding at a good pace and covering lots of ground. |

| Notes: |
Bicycles will be kept in the residence rooms during the night or when not being used. Car-pool drivers will be required to obtain a parking permit for parking in one of the university parking lots. The cost, if any, of the parking permits will be added to car-pool costs and shared.
Whether 12 people can participate in this event is contingent on whether we have the necessary number of car-pool drivers and bike-carrying capacity. In the event that there is a shortage of car-pool drivers, the event-organizer reserves the right to give priority to individuals who are able to carry bicycles with their vehicles. - Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions. - When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where TOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refund of money if you cancel. - We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in TOC events. - Details of this event are subject to undergo a change at any point in time, with or without warning. - Questions about equipment or rentals?
