Itinerary:
The carpool departure is at 7:30 p.m., October 10, 2008, from the Downsview Subway Station Kiss and Ride. Be punctual in getting to the carpool departure point, as the departure time is firm.

This ride will contain a lot of on-road riding, with some rolling hills and steep climbs for terrain. The road surfaces will be a mixture of asphalt and gravel. Difficulty-wise, the ride is rated, on a scale of 5, as a 4/5.

We will be doing a 100 km bike tour on the island over the course of 2-3 days, from Friday to Monday, on the Thanksgiving Day long weekend in early October. Our time on the island will also provide some opportunity for hiking and off-road sight-seeing.

If you are inexperienced or uncomfortable with on-road riding or long-distance riding, you should not sign up for this event.

But what a wonderful Thanksgiving adventure this ride promises to be! Manitoulin Island, known as "Spirit Island", is found within Lake Huron. It is about 130 km wide, from west to east, and 50 km wide from north to south. Aboriginal groups who had settled in the area centuries ago believed that "Kitche Manitou" or the Great Spirit, resided on Manitoulin Island. The island is, clearly, a special place.

We will leave Toronto for Tobermoray on Friday night, staying overnight in Tobermoray. Early on Saturday morning, we will take the ferry across to Manitoulin Island, where we will stay until Monday afternoon/evening, when we will catch the ferry back to the mainland and return to Toronto. To participate in this event, you must obey all rules of the road, wear a bike helmet, and wear fluorescent or bright clothing (to increase your visibility while riding on public roads). You must also have front and rear bike lights and a bell. You also need to be in good physical condition and good cycling condition.

CYCLING EXPERIENCE AND CONDITIONING INFORMATION: All registrants should provide information in the "Notes" section when they sign up as to their cycling ability and experience. The event coordinator retains the discretion to remove individuals from the registration list if he feels that they are unprepared for a ride of this kind.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION: When you sign up for this event, please indicate, in the Notes Section, whether you are able to drive and, if so, how many people and bikes (in total, including you and your bike), your vehicle can carry. If I know this information from the moment you register, it is much easier for me to organize the carpool via e-mail. So PLEASE provide this information WHEN YOU SIGN UP.
