Itinerary:

PROPER ICERS ARE MANDATORY FOR THIS HIKE.
If your icers have the metal spirals (such as Yaktrax), throw them out.
Proper icers for forest trails must have sharp metal points to dig into the ice.
If you don't have proper icers, get some.
There are some VERY STEEP hills.
If the trails are icy, without ICERS you might fall on your face or slide into a tree and require a trip to the hospital!
Please do not show up for the hike without PROPER ICERS
See the notes at the bottom of this page for icer type information
Hopefully I have made my point!

BE PREPARD FOR TWISTS AND TURNS AND UPS AND DOWNS
From km 4 thru 13 the terrain will be similar to Crothers Woods, but more challenging!
We will hike at a moderate pace, but there will be hills
and mountain bike wooden bridges to negotiate
The map of the route is approximate.

DISTANCE: about 17 km

PACE: 5 km/h

DIFFICULTY: D4

We will have snack breaks on the trail

ICERS
  • Eagle Claw Ice Cleats - excellent grip on ice! like walking on dry pavement
    http://www.basspro.com/Eagle-Claw-Stainless- Steel-Chain-Ice-Cleats/product/2219985/
I bought mine at Bass Pro Shops in Vaughan Mills
similar design as Kahtoola, but about 1/3 the price.
  • Kahtoola MICROspikes - excellent grip on ice! like walking on dry pavement
    https://kahtoola.com/product/microspikes/
  • Icetrekkers Diamond Grips - good grip, but may slide a bit on steep sheer ice.
They rust very easily so must be dried thoroughly after use.
more expensive than Eagle Claw Ice Cleats
  • STABILicers - good grip on level surface such as city sidewalks
but tended to roll off my shoes on uneven terrain like forest trails
models with velcro straps might be ok
  • Yaktrax might be ok for flat, level city sidewalks,
but are NO GOOD for forest trails with any slope
  • I suggest taking your hiking shoes with you when shopping for icers to ensure a good fit.
