Doors Open Richmond Hill: Two shrines and Oak Ridges Trail (5/14/2016)

Note: Drivers will get preference on the waiting list. I'll increase the maximum number of participants as we get more drivers. You can also meet us at the event.

Doors Open is an annual series of events, when many sites in Ontario communities open their doors to the general public. We'll visit two such sites in Richmond Hill, apart from traversing the Oak Ridges Trail.

Hike: Bond Lake - Swan Lake loop (15 km @ 4 km/hr)
Richmond Hill Hindu Temple
This colorful temple is among the largest Hindu shrines in Canada. During Doors Open Ontario, they offer guided tours of the temple (And free food, if you happen to be there at the right time).
 
St. Mary and St. Joseph Coptic Orthodox Church
The interior of this beautiful church features hand-painted murals, carved wood and Egyptian marble. As part of Doors Open Ontario, visitors can enjoy Coptic art and music here.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Water
  • Weather appropriate clothing
  • Hiking shoes
  • Cash for the carpool cost (only for the carpool passengers; around $4-$5, depending on number of passengers)
  • Post-hike footwear (only for the carpool passengers: to help keep the cars clean)

You can meet us at either of these places:

8:30 am (Meet at Carpool): Finch Station Passenger Pick-up and Drop-off (the circular structure at NW corner of Yonge St and Hendon Ave). Parking is free on weekends. Address: 18 Hendon Ave, Toronto, ON M2M 4G8. ( Map). Carpool departure at 8:35 am.

9:10 am (Meet at event): Parking lot near the William Bond Park, Richmond Hill, ON L4E 5C4. The parking lot is located at the Oak Ridges Trail entrance on the Old Colony Rd, between Tiger Lily St and Lebovic Dr. Nearest address for GPS: 251 Old Colony Rd, Richmond Hill, ON L4E 5B2. (Map )

Notes:
  • This hike will go on in case of moderate rain. It'll be canceled only if a severe thunderstorm is forecast.
  • Dog owners bring their own cars.
