Itinerary:

The terrain is mostly flat with a short, hilly, rocky section near the end. Length of hike is approximately 8 km and pace will be 4- 4.5 km/h.

If you are willing to be a car pool driver, please indicate how many passengers you can take.

This is a loop hike but note that several of the side trails are closed which will shorten this normally more difficult hike. As a result, we will be walking along a very easy trail and the road for a good portion of the hike; the end of the hike is a bit more rugged, but it's short so overall, this is not a difficult hike. There are NO facilities along the trail. After the hike we'll visit the Badlands and take some photos and then we'll stop at the Spirit Tree for lunch and, if you like, you can try some of their award-winning cider.

This hike is suitable for beginner hikers, but all are welcome, as long as you do not rush ahead. Please do not sign up for this hike unless you plan to join us for lunch.

If you have never visited the Cheltenham Badlands, they are a must see. They exhibit the reddish hue of the Queenston Shale that forms them; the iron oxide in the shale produces this colour. The narrow greenish bands that can be seen throughout the shale are due to the change of red iron oxide to green iron oxide brought on by the circulating groundwater.

Members willing to drive may get priority on the hike. Although the hike indicates a maximum of 8 participants, I will take up to 16 and will add passengers once a sufficient number of drivers are registered.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $30.44 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Wednesday, April 17, 2024). Notes:

Anyone cancelling after the registration cutoff will receive an automatic no show. No exceptions. I apologize, but it takes time and effort to make these plans and last minute cancellations create extra work for the coordinator, costs other carpoolers more money, and does not allow those on the waiting list an opportunity to participate.
