Itinerary:

If you've never canoed through Ontario's pristine lakes and rivers ... you're missing out on one of the province's great pleasures!

This one-day introductory course is for the canoeist with no or little previous experience in canoeing. Participants will learn safe tandem canoeing from certified instructors at Dragonfly Paddling, including basic rescue techniques, while increasing their confidence. We'll have lots of fun, too! Price includes all equipment and ORCKA (Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association) membership for one year.

Successful participants will receive certification in ORCKA Basic Level 2.

(I and other TOC volunteers will be posting some overnight canoe trips this summer. You will need to know these skills at the minimum to join any of my trips as I want to be sure you're safe and have a good time!)

Skills Taught:

  • How to put the canoe in the water and remove it.
  • How to get in and out of a canoe without falling into the drink.
  • Paddling positions and trimming
  • Changing positions
  • How to paddle in a straight line forward and backward.
  • How to turn, move sideways, move in a circle and stop.
  • Inside and outside landings
  • How to pick up and carry a canoe for portages, etc.
  • Equipment selection, knowledge and care
  • Safe canoeing procedures
  • Outdoor precautions
  • Government regulations
  • Safety
  • Swimming and treading water
  • Retrieving a swamped canoe
  • Canoe over canoe rescue
