Itinerary: | ||||||||||||||||||||||
This hike will take you through two of the less explored ravines of Toronto. It is ideal for beginners: it's 14.5 km, but always close to the public transit in case your legs give away. The two ravines offer hilly terrain for the adventurous, but also include staircases as easier alternatives. We will walk at a speed of 4 km/hr and take three short breaks, so that you can get some rest and enjoy the scenery. Starting at the Main St station, we will first visit the Glen Stewart Ravine. It is a 11-hectare forest dominated by red oak and red maple, and home to several birds. Beautiful houses designed by Ed en Smith are perched across its boundaries. The terrain offers challenges to those willing to explore the area, climb the hills, and jump across the muddy stream. We will tread lightly since the ravine is vulnerable to erosion. The less adventurous can take the staircase, which runs along the entire length of the ravine. Next, we will stop for a water break at the Ivan Forrest Gardens. We will then hike along the lakeshore using the Boardwalk/Martin Goodman/Waterfront Trail, before taking another short break at the Ashbridge's Bay Park. We will continue our journey traveling across Woodbine, Measurement and Orchard parks. If everyone in the group has the energy to cover an extra mile, we will also take a round in the peaceful St. John's Norway Cemetery. After that, we arrive at the last challenging part of our journey: the Williamson Park Ravine. It offers varied terrain, including hills, mud and a small stream to cross (using wooden planks/logs). We will take our last short break at the Coxwell Avenue Parkette, from where the hikers have the option to proceed towards the Coxwell subway station or the Festiva l of South Asia (both less than a km away). There's everything from from flashy Bollywood music to classical dance performances, not to mention the cheap Indian food. Map | ||||||||||||||||||||||
