Itinerary:
Between Bolton and Weston, where rains brought by Hurricane Hazel washed away 14 homes in October 1954, the Humber River is now carefully flood controlled by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Though this stretch is completely open and accessible, the two dam projects along its length have successfully reduced the flow to mainly a long and continuous swift. This is no longer a traditional canoe route.

After meeting for the carpool at Downsview Station, we will leave a car at Humber Bridge Trail outside of Kleinburg, and begin at Edelweiss Park in the town of Bolton. Almost immediately we will have to portage around the old mill dam, cataract, and diversion project in the original village. There are no other man made obstacles, we will takeout where we started at Humber Bridge Trail.

The total distance is difficult to estimate but a previous trip report gave 6 hours for this route in early May. Most if not all of the surrounding property is parkland and floodplain, or otherwise owned by the TRCA and undeveloped. We will be passing under numerous roadway bridges.

The currently high water conditions are fast and cold. Be prepared with warm clothing and a waterproofed extra set. Otherwise the river is flat and shallow, with few natural obstacles. It is likely you will have to maintain control of your boat for long uninterrupted periods of time, without breaks, though the forward paddling may be non-existent. There is danger in encountering fallen trees which may require portaging along the shore.

There is no convenient provider of rental equipment. For those that have their own canoe, a partner may be provided, and vice-versa, or you may rent from MEC. Either way, transportation to and from the start and finish are the individual members' responsibility, and participation in general depends on the availability of roof racks.

If you have any suitable resources; your own boat, transportation for the same, or seek to share a rental with someone else, please say so in the notes field and you will be paired up.

The competancy of the paddler, as well as the preparedness of the boat will both be considered prior to participation. Every craft must carry the Coast Guard required equipment listed here and we will carry out an inspection.
